just feeling random, but i think we should learn how to do 4-mallet grip! like properly, and without injuring our hands or arms or something!! after all, for cadenza, y'all may need to play 4 mallet stuff. i used 4 mallets in sec one for cadenza before, but looking back, i realise i was playing... wrongly. and i haven't been playing 4 mallets ever since T.T which is NOT GOOD!
so, there are quite a number of different grips (for holding 2 mallets in one hand), like for example the burton grip or stevens grip. y'all know kenneth, one of the percussionists at rwinds? yeah i think he used the stevens grip for coda, if i'm not wrong. (so i may be wrong.)
(well basically all the rwinds perc people are really quite pro, so next time after you graduate from RG - not too far away! - join rwinds at least once, cos the experience is really good, and you'll really learn alot, and make great friends too.)
so here are a few websites you can explore to learn more!
burton grip http://www.bknights.org/ensembles/bkpe/pdf/BurtonGrip.pdf
stevens grip http://www.vicfirth.com/education/articles/howarth.html
maybe y'all can try burton grip first? it seems more familiar, in terms of holding the mallets i guess. of course if you want to try stevens there isn't any problem. but anyway the 4-mallet grip is really quite important, and i read on a percussion website before that actually, we should learn the 4-mallet grip once we start learning mallets, cos it's just as important as the usual 1 mallet per hand grip. :D yup!
do take time to try it out okay! and maybe we'll make a trip back after the new sec ones join yall - eh must tell us when they join ok! :)

During a particularly memorable band camp, while the rest of the band were having dinner, the percussion section decided instead to climb over the wooden railing to the beach where they took photos, skipped stones and watched the sunset together. This episode reflects the spontaneity and open mind of all our members, our fun-loving and bubbly personalities earning us the nickname Perky Percs. It also shows how close-knit we are, bonded by numerous section outings we have to buy drumsticks, celebrate birthdays or just to have fun together. The unique experiences of being a percussionist that no other section can understand also bind us together, from training your arm muscles by playing cymbals to moving the timpani for the first time to sleeping in the section area in the band room, a privilege no other section has. We also have immense love and passion for our instruments and making music, protecting our drums and mallets with our lives and always pushing our limits by finding our own scores to try. Many may think that percussion is unimportant, but there is no denying that every part in a band piece contributes to the music – the bass drum may be soft, but it keeps the tempo; the crash cymbals may only come in twice in an entire piece, but the grandeur of the crash will lend a huge emphasis to the music. If you still think that percussion is way too easy, come try it out yourself, and even if your sticking and subdivision are perfect, challenge yourself with new rhythms. On the contrary, if you think that percussion is way too difficult, don’t worry, you’ll find in us a new family to support and guide you throughout your journey in RGSSB. <3

Heh I don't have photos to post. OH WAIT ACTUALLY I DO! I forgot that I brought my camera to the June band camp and SOME PEOPLE went to fiddle with it, thinking it was xinhui's or something like that -.-
Sec 1's SBM photo! I think this one's the nicest, the rest of the photos i took were of them stoning =.=
another one of them, with their (lame) direct!
(By the way, did you know that there's actually a term "lame duck"? Haha google it lol.)
I don't really have alot of section photos, cos ernie was taking all the photos during section interaction with her awesome DSLR. D: I want one too!
Oh and I was going through super old posts, like from when ernie and i were sec 1, just for the fun of it. Juniors! Yall can go through the old posts too and see how we looked like in sec 1 (2008), all toot and everything. And have a look at your great-grand directs (a.k.a our (ernie and i) sec 4 seniors when we were sec 1, gosh how many times have i said this already ._.)
Yes and there are really cool videos hidden somewhere in the archives! Perc videos, mainly, that are beneficial for honing your percussion skills :) There're so many links to the archives, just pick one and start looking from there :D
Lastly DON'T FORGET XING ERN AND ME OKAY i hope this isn't gonna be my last post, and i hope that i do come back to visit the blog regularly after going to JC. :( I'm pretty sure that ernie and i will come back together to visit yall, even this year, so watch your backs ah (haha btw i posted sth along these lines ages ago on this blog).
Time flies. My sec 4 seniors when i was in sec 1 have already entered university. Helen and Talia, when y'all become sec 4s, xing ern and i will be entering uni too. So treasure the time yall have here in RGSSB (mainly for the current sec 3s and hwi soo) and for the sec 1s, your journey with RGSSB has just begun. There's no looking back from here.
And so, the end of a lengthy post (the sec 3s' posts when they were in sec 1 were wayyyy longer than this one! and much more luo suo.).
And also, the end of another's journey with RGSSB.

this is the 130th post, so it started with a great-big-grand-bang.
anyway, just wanted to say, today was kinda the last official "sectionals" with yall. and i really hope we enjoyed playing CATS today :D it's kinda sad knowing that exactly one week from now, ernie and i would have already stepped down. heh.
your SL will be revealed soon, and hope y'all will await it in anticipation. yeah. :)
actually i have a confession to make, and i really hope you guys don't mind....
I LOVE YOU SECTION!!!
yeah that's all. :)

Heard that we most likely are playing Sagrada for Open House, in May. We have a little over a week to practice after band break, so do make sure you still are fluent in your parts after we return to band! Ernie and I will be checking on you, so do try to practice.
If you did leave the SYF stage with regrets (which I hope no one did), please take this opportunity to leave your regrets behind, because SYF wasn't the last time we were playing the piece! :D

Well, now that it's over, WHY DON'T WE PLAN A SECTION OUTING??? It's been EONS since we last went (i think.) Section WWW is probably out (-.-) and since we've used section XXX before, we should use Section ZZZ! A.k.a. SECTION SLEEPOVER! (get the ZZZ? haha.) Yes. Let's vote for someone's house where we can go and have a sleepover. Personally, I prefer Ernie's house cos it's super big. But if the Sec 1s live in terrace houses/bungalows then their's would be the first choice :)
Maybe somewhere in the June hols lah. Maybe the beginning of the June hols, so we can get everyone to go before they fly off somewhere for their own family vacation. KEEP THE BEGINNING OF THE JUNE HOLIDAYS FREE FOR SECTION ZZZ!
okay and ERNIE post your pics from the DSL-R 8)))
aliza
p.s. THE SEC 1S HAVENT GOTTEN THEIR DRUMSTICKS YET! maybe we can have Section YYY during band break and Section ZZZ during June hols. Haha.
